Mia Makela (a.k.a SOLU) is finnish media+live cinema artist, teacher, investigator and cultural activist residing in Barcelona.




Her trajectory has led her from shamanistic studies to art. From art to media art and design. From media art to organization of events and workshops on contemporary digital culture. As part of fiftyfifty.org collective (until 2002), she organized Hacker Techniques workshop, Gameboy soundlab, Playtime event amongst ther activities.
She has given lectures on various themes including robots, audiovisual culture, tactical sound and her own artistic work. She has written articles on different subjects, including Vjing and Micromusic (Repellent Magazine). Her discussion with Vanni Brusadin was published in “Anarchitexts-Essays in Global Digital Resistance” (2002).

In 2004 she launched dorkbot.org in Barcelona presenting people who do strange things with electricity every other month in the local gallery Metronom. Her latest ocupation is PUBLIC.BCN which concentrates all her audiovisual activities under the same label (workshops, events, AVcommunity, site-spesific projects, ideas....)

She started performing visuals as part of audiovisual improvisational band called DADATA in 2001 and after the dissolution of the group she continued as SOLU. She has collaborated with many experimental musicians including Heidi Mortenson and Dj Rupture. With Mortenson she opened Transmediale festival in Berlin 2004 and performed at Zagreb Biennale of Music, Cimatics-festival in Brussels and Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki (2003). She has also performed at various other festivals including SONIC ACTS in Amsterdam, SONAR festival in Barcelona, AVIT in Birmingham, MAPPING in Geneve and TRANSIT_MX in Mexico City.

Her experimental music videos have been widely exhibited in festivals around the world: Xfest, Impact, Sonar, etc. Her style ranges from minimal abstractions and strongly processed material to multilayered ambiental landscapes. She processes her visual material with MAX/MSP/JITTER and other programmes like Isadora.

In 2006 she published her thesis on LIVE CINEMA language and elements, (Medialaboratory, Helsinki) which gathers her experience on realtime visuals. IN 2007 she edited a special issue on LIVE CINEMA for a:minima magazine. Her latest workshop titled ”Audiovisual Realtime Creation” took place in Spain, Germany, Belgium, Finland and Mexico.

Mia Makela (a.k.a SOLU) de origen finlandesa se dedica a la practica y enseñansa del arte audiovisual en tiempo real, investigación independiente y activismo cultural. Actualmente reside en Barcelona.


Su trajectoria la ha llevado desde estudios del chamanismo al arte. Desde el arte a las nuevas medias y el diseño digital. Desde las nuevas medias a la organización de eventos y workshops de cultura digital post-contemporanea. Formó parte del colectivo fifityfifty.org (hasta 2002) y organizó talleres como "Tecnicos de Hackers", "Gameboy Soundlab" y "Playtime" evento entre otras actividades.

Ha dado presentaciónes sobre varios temas incluido robotica, cultura audiovisual, sonido tactico y su trabajo artistico. Ha escrito articulos sobre temas como VJng y Micromusic.net (Repellent Magazine). En 2004 inició dorkbot.org en Barcelona que presentó "la gente que hacen cosas raras con electricidad.." en la galeria Metronom. Su ultima ocupación es PUBLIC.BCN, que concentra todas sus actividades bajo del mismo "sello" y su colaboración con RadioPaca y teatro Conservas.

Solu empezó realizar visuales en directo en la banda improvisacional DADATA en 2001 y despues de su disolución continuaba bajo el nombre SOLU.
Ha colaborado con varios músicos experimentales como Heidi Mortenson y Dj Rupture. Con Mortenson abrió el festival Transmediale en Berlin 2004. Ha actuado en cientos de eventos incuido Zagreb Biennale of Music, Cimatics-festival(Bruselas), Museo de Arte Contemporario (Helsinki), SONIC ACTS (Amsterdam), SONAR festival (Barcelona), AVIT (Birmingham), MAPPING (Ginebra), TRANSIT_MX (Ciudad de Mexico), Live Cinema Nights (San Jose), Museo Nacional de Mujeres en Arte (Washington DC) etc....

Sus videoclips experimentales han sido exhibidos en Xfest, Impact, Sonar, FLACC, etc y publicado en DVDs. Su estilo visual ha sido describido como "La versión digital de la poesia de William Blake". Su herramientas incluyen MAX/MSP/JITTER, Isadora, Modul8 entre otros.

En el año 2006 publicó su tesis sobre la lenguage de LIVE CINEMA(Medialaboratory, Helsinki) como resultado de su experiencia en el campo de los audiovisuales en tiempo real. En 2007 editó un número especial sobre LIVE CINEMA para la revista a:minima. Su ultimo taller titulado "Creación audiovisual en tiempo real" tomó lugar en España, Belgica, Alemania, Finlandia y Mexico.
